Leaving Medicine

Whether you’re questioning your career or exploring a passion, leaving medicine shouldn’t mean losing your identity. It’s about finding it.

My rock bottom as a doctor came seven years into practice. As a husband and father, I was angry and depleted. As a clinician, I was burned out and unsure. But, wanting a change in profession or a better work-life balance contradicts almost all our medical training. What will others think? How much will it affect my income? The worst: Am I a failure?

No one can undo that fear for you. It’s what got you to where you are and you need a little of it to succeed. But, it does require clarity, some direction, and the right support. As a physician turned entrepreneur who learned the hard lessons of life as a start-up, exited a $5,000 investment to an $8 billion enterprise, and found validation with executive positions in both medicine and business—my proudest achievement remains tapping into my passion and helping other doctors do the same.

You can do this.

Overwhelmed and feeling stuck? Afraid you’ll get it wrong? Don’t know where to start? I can help.

Change isn’t easy, but you can do hard things. Hitting reset on your career and finding a more balanced life doesn’t have to mean calling it quits as a physician. It might—but it may also mean regaining fulfillment in patient care again, transitioning to nonclinical work, or it might be some combination of introducing passion projects for diversity of interest and income. Either way, pulling the trigger or even considering your options can be overwhelming. Take the first step and get help.
